Monitors measuring 24 inches, offering Full HD resolution and a few additional features are quickly becoming the default option in the budget PC display market. Enter the HP 24mh monitor, a beautiful budget display designed for office users as well home entertainment. Other notable frills include IPS technology and built-in speakers that are intended to be more than just occasional.
Simply put, the HP 24mh falls in between the cheapest screens in this category, which typically lack HDR and USB-C support, while undercutting truly professional-grade content creation models like the 27-inch Asus VG278Q with G-Sync support, a 1ms refresh rate, and a curved QHD (3440 X 1440) display. Time to find out if HP has successfully managed to navigate a clear path between those two extremes.
Design & Features
Immediate impressions of the HP 24mh FHD panel reveal a mix of thin bezels on three sides of its 24-inch IPS panel and a prominent lower chin on the bottom. The latter detracts from what would otherwise be a boring design, and it’s there for a reason.
That chin houses a pair of speakers on the rear, IR remote sensors, and control buttons on the right side. Being a budget monitor, it doesn’t include adaptive sync technology, but it works fine out of the box. The 60Hz refresh rate will not appeal to serious gamers, but for basic use and home entertainment, the IPS screen used here is awesome.
Port selection is good, but it lacks USB-C that’s becoming standard even in the budget category. Available port options here are VGA, HDMI, and DisplayPort, and with the thin screen bezels, you can easily pair this screen side-by-side in a multi-monitor setup.
Performance
Let the HP 24mh’s affordable price not deceive you that this monitor is a poor performer in any way. HP’s default settings deliver a notable punch and rich experience. This is not a true HDR display by any stretch, thanks to a lack of local dimming, but a 1000:1 contrast ratio, 5ms response time, and 250 cd/m2 brightness are more than ideal for basic computing needs.
With calibration, this unit holds its own against more expensive panels in the same category and can handle content viewing with reasonable aplomb. But serious content professionals looking for a capable 4K panel will need to look at a bigger screen, something like the 32-inch LG 32QN600-B with HDR 10 and AMD FreeSync support is more recommendable.
Anyway, thanks to the IPS panel, the HP 24mh offers excellent viewing angles and with a little tweaking, nearly all users will be able to settle on a very pleasing overall setup. Factor in the sleek design and it’s a great tool for productivity.
Bottom Line
With the 24-inch HP 24mh, the HP offers a pretty broad remit. For the most part, it delivers as it should. For general productivity, this screen is the ultimate beauty. It’s medium-sized, bold, offers loads of desktop space thanks to the FHD resolution, along with reasonable pixel density and precision.
Even with the lack of USB port(s), it’s not enough, however, to detract from what is a well-rounded display solution and a strong candidate as a long-term investment to improve productivity, and frankly, the HP 24mh is a viewing enjoyment.
