For the next few weeks, I will be using the Asus Chromebook Flip C302CA for my text- and web-based work. It’s incredibly thin and light, and comes in at a fraction of the cost of most ultraportables in the market. However, there’s a fairly significant problem: it doesn’t have a USB-A or HDMI ports. All it gets are two USB-C ports and a microSD card slot. If you’ve recently bought a MacBook, you must have encountered the same problem too. That’s where the VAVA USB C Hub 8-in-1 Adapter comes in.
It costs fairly more than many USB-C adapters and hubs, but it’s much more functional and reliable. In fact, it isn’t that expensive, and the price can be justified by its excellent build quality and connectivity options that include a charging port. For the price and port selection, it makes for an excellent pick for those in need of a more versatile set of ports for their laptops. It is our Editors’ Choice for USB-C adapters.
Design
Measuring 5.0 by 1.8 by 0.6 inches (HWD), the VAVA USB C Hub is a silver-colored box with a 5-inch black cable extending from the bottom edge and terminating in a USB-C connector. An HDMI port sits on the top edge, next are three USB 3.0 ports, a USB Type C PD Charging Port and Ethernet are placed on the curved end.
The right edge holds a TF and SD slot, making the total number of ports 8, in such a small hub. Practically, it offers a better port selection as compared to the Anker USB C Hub Adapter, that costs around the same price but only offers 5 slots. If you need more slots, including 4K, the VAVA USB C Hub, 8-in-1 USB C Adapter with 4K offers up to 100W Pd charging port for MacBook Pro/Air and all other type C Windows laptops.
Performance
On the VAVA USB C Hub 8-in-1 Adapter, everything works as it should, you can plug a power adapter into the right USB-C port, a mouse into the USB 3.0 port and a thumb drive into the adjacent USB slot. You can as well connect the hub to a TV over HDMI and insert both SD and microSD into their slots.
All of them function well simultaneously and perfectly. The USB drive and both cards will show up as external storage, on the laptop screen, which you can extend to the connected TV, and can used the connected mouse, and the power-pass will keep the system fully charged.
The additional USB slots are invaluable especially when you need extra storage, or when you need to switch between multiple screens on a temporary workstation. The VAVA doesn’t need require external power to function, so you don’t need to keep it plugged to your charge if your connected device has enough power to keep it running.
Verdict
The VAVA USB C Hub 8-in-1 Adapter is small, versatile and reliable and offers great value as compared to cheap hubs available online, and most of them have fewer ports and not as reliable. The VAVA works exactly as it should, managing external storage, peripherals, video, and charging from MacBooks and Chromebooks with ease.
If you need to pack light enough and your notebook doesn’t have enough ports for your liking, the VAVA USB Hub can stand alongside that external battery pack as you preferred travel companions.
